Hugo House
1634 11th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122

Held on the first and third Monday of every month in the Hugo House Lapis Theater at 7:00 p.m., Works in Progress is an open mic for all writers. Read your work, meet other writers, and find out what’s going on in the literary community. Poetry, fiction, essays, memoirs, plays, unclassified, and unclassifiable work of a literary nature are all welcome.

Applause for all. No judgment. Some content not suitable for children or small animals. Listeners welcome.

How Works in Progress Works

Sign-ups begin at approximately 6:00 p.m after the facilitator arrives. There is time for 26 five-minute reads and a lightning round (4 two-minute reads), for a maximum of 30 reads. Come early to make sure you get a chance to read because the slots can fill up quickly. Admission is free and the bar is open to provide hydration and courage.

All readings are time limited. Practice your piece in advance to make sure the chimes don’t go off and the applause doesn’t begin before you’ve finished what you started.

The first name is drawn at 7 p.m. and the reading begins with the first flight of 13 five-minute reads. A short intermission allows for hobnobbing, restroom visits, and a purchase of a drink at the bar. Then come back for up to 13 more five minute reads, capped off by the lightning round at the end.
