Wabi Sabi is a Japanese aesthetic which appreciates the beauty of things imperfect, incomplete and impermanent... rustic, earthy, simple, textured, and organic...all based on our connection to nature and the effects of the passage of time, cycles of life, weather. You will learn about wabi sabi tenets and Japanese design elements and how they can be used in creating collages. On the first day, I will demonstrate how to hand paint (using acrylic paints) Japanese papers, washi papers like tengucho and kinwashi. I will supply many of these papers. You will then hand paint your papers using paint, stencils, stamps and stamping tools. Rust and tea techniques will also be introduced. Then I will introduce simple compositions, design elements and principles and tips for creating your own collages. You will get lots of one on one attention and go home with a number of collages and ideas on how to continue in your studio.
