Skillful use of complementary colors is a very important concept to master as an artist, right up there with understanding values and composition. It’s vital in order to create satisfying paintings that hold the attention of the viewer.

Each pair of complementary colors has a warm and cool shade. We will devote a full day to each pair. You will learn how to push and pull that warmth and coolness, how to use them full strength and how to mix them to get beautiful tonal shades that will please the eye and perfect your work.

Each day of the workshop, we will explore a different pair of complementary colors. In the mornings, you will learn how to use them full strength and how to mix them to get beautiful subdued and tonal shades that please the eye and perfect your work. You will produce a series of color swatches that will provide you with a reference template using different combinations of pigments. The afternoon of each day will be devoted to working on a painting using the complimentary colors studied in that session. You will be provided with reference material to work from.

After this workshop intensive, you’ll be seeing complementary colors everywhere!
