Cake Picnic

Feasting, Dancing and Ceremony!
Saturday, May 19th in Pope Marine Plaza, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Music by DJ Captain Peacock and the Unexpected Brass Band, cake by Shannon Africa, Ananda Coyle, Jessica Brooks and Lauren Kohn; live performance by O’Meara Dance Studio.

Cake Picnic builds upon the cascading momentum of the Rhododendron Festival Grand Parade, celebrating Port Townsend’s cultural heritage with a free feast of locally made artisan cake and dancing for children of all ages, all in the glorious Port Townsend sunshine.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the people of Port Townsend and the S’Klallam tribe would congregate and enjoy community feasts, bringing together individuals from all walks of life. Chief Chetzemoka, Joe Kuhn, and James G. Swan were known for hosting massive community clam bakes that would serve 1200+ people. Inspired in part by these spirited events in Port Townsend’s history and the Salish custom of potlatch, Cake Picnic is an opportunity to bring back an old tradition and celebrate our rich local culture.

Renowned local bakers Shannon Africa from Seashell Cakes, Ananda Coyle from Aldrich’s Market, Jessica Brooks from Sweet Lamb Bakery and Lauren Kohn, are leading the production of 2,000 slices of delectable artisan cake. Produced using eggs from Spring Rain and Finnriver and flour from Nash’s Farm, this exquisite cake is guaranteed to bring smiles to faces.

On Saturday May 19th, as the Rhododendron Parade swirls into Pope Marine Park, the Cake Picnic begins! Starting with a ribbon cutting ceremony led by the Rhody Royalty followed by free cake and a massive dance party. Featuring DJ Captain Peacock, the Unexpected Brass Band, Songlines Choir and the O’Meara Dance Studio, this momentous extravaganza is bound to lift the spirit to higher realms.

Cake Picnic is an opportunity to eat and dance together, while hosting local arts, neighboring communities and many others. Ultimately, it builds upon one of the region’s greatest traditions: celebration.
