Braiding and Stitching with Cattail Leaves
Basket weaving class with Nicole Larson

Finnriver Farm & Cidery

Saturday, March 15th 11:30 - 4pm
Sunday, March 16th 11:30 - 3pm

Come and learn a fun and versatile weaving technique and make a small bowl or a snake to hang on your wall. In this 2 day long class you will learn how to weave a 5-strand plait with locally gathered cattail leaves, then sew them together with a natural twine using a special stitching technique. You will have a choice of either making a small bowl or a snake to hang on your wall.

Traditionally called plaiting, the “plaits” are used to make many utilitarian and decorative crafts with origins in several countries. Hats, bags, shoes and rugs are some of the items that can be made with various lengths and styles of braids. Throughout class there will be discussion on the history of weaving plaits with woven examples and books for inspiration. Nicole will also share how to best harvest, store and process Cattails(Typha spp.) to be used in basketry.
Nicole Larson, local basket weaver and teacher, will be teaching this inspiring and engaging hands-on class at the beautiful and welcoming barn space at Finnriver. All materials included and prepared by Nicole, some tools suggested but extras will be on hand ~ Cost for two days: $115 - includes all material and 2 Finnriver drink tokens
