Finnriver welcomes Canarissimo! Where Fats Waller meets Francisco Canaro: the Stride Tango Trio is a fusion of vintage tango with vintage jazz. It is inspired by Francisco Canaro, who spent 2 years under the spell of Josephine Baker and the 1920s American Jazz scene in Paris. Back in Buenos Aires for the next decade, his orchestra performed with the characteristic rhythm of the Fats Waller stride.
Bertram Levy’s new Stride Tango Trio celebrates that connection with a fresh Northern American re-imagination of Canaro’s music in a style of the stride they are calling “Canarissimo.” The trio is a collaboration between bandoneon master Bertram Levy, who has been immersed in classical and modern forms of Argentine tango for the last 30 years, and vintage jazz greats Ryan Hoffman on guitar and Jonathan Doyle on clarinet. The group features the amazing vocalist Robin Kallsen with her uniquely 1920s voice.
