Finnriver gladily welcomes this soulful and virtuosic all-women sax quartet with drums was founded in 1988. Named in honor of Billy Tipton, a woman who lived as a man in order to pursue a career in music, the Tipton Sax Quartet similarly follows its own path. Their unique repertoire features a blend of jazz, blues and world music along with their own unique compositions, and every concert is infused with joy, virtuosity and playfulness. Influences range from classic jazz saxophone players such as Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, Johnny Hodges and Paul Desmond to music celebrating world cultures such as bluegrass, klezmer, yodeling, Italian tarantellas, and Algerian rai music.
