SUMMARY:Greater Bridgeport Symphony (GBS) Presents Horizons Of The Ear
th March 14 at Mertens Theater at the University of Bridgeport
DESCRIPTION:Greater Bridgeport Symphony (GBS) continues its 80th seaso
n exploring New Horizons as conductor Eduardo Leandro presents classic
s and never-before-heard music in Horizons Of The Earth Saturday\, Mar
ch 14\, 2026 at Mertens Theater (in the Bernhardt Center at the Univer
sity of Bridgeport) at 7:30 PM.\n \nMaestro Leandro is excited to bri
ng two musical classics evocative of the earth to life with Maurice Ra
vel’s Mother Goose Suite and Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring\,
together with a brand-new composition:  The Rainbow Bridge\, a concer
to for saxophone with the eminent Travis LaPlante\, its composer\, sol
oing on sax.  Says Leandro\, “When I was asked for notes on this pi
ece last December\, all I could say was that it would be exciting for
audience and players alike.  The music is just finished and is really
exciting! Travis is an amazing artist\, a master of ‘circular breat
hing.’  He can make sounds on the saxophone like most people have n
ever heard.  Our audience is in for a treat!”\n \nThe Ravel and Co
pland pieces in this concert will evoke images of the earth.  “Clos
e your eyes during Mother Goose and Appalachian Spring\, and your mind
will conjure pictures of landscapes both from fairy tales and from th
e great American mountains\,” says GBS President Mark Halstead.
“This is some of the greatest of 20th century music\, paired with th
e newness of Rainbow Bridge.  It’s going to be a memorable night of
music – and more.”\n \nAs happened at GBS’ November concert at
Mertens Theater\, the evening is not just about sound\, but sight.
The Bernhard Center’s Schelfhaudt Gallery will again feature an art
show\, free to symphony-goers.  The night also includes a pre-concert
talk at 7:00 PM right before the show in the recital hall across the
lobby from the auditorium by Russell Fisher\, professor of music at U.
B.\, who will walk concertgoers through each piece of music.  “The
program for the evening has something interesting for everyone from th
e moment they walk in the door\,” says GBS Executive Director Phylli
s Cortese.  “Our November concert had a similar combination of musi
c\, graphic arts and sculpture\, and the audience reveled in the total
arts experience.”  Leandro adds\, “There is nothing compared to
seeing music being made by an orchestra.”\n \nThis season’s New H
orizons theme has thus far explored the Classical elements throughout.
On April 11\, GBS will finish its season with Horizons Of Water.  Th
e entire season is dedicated to the life and work of GBS’ late patro
ns\, Herbert and Doris Harrington.\n \nTickets are available at www.G
 BS.org\, ranging from $21 to $72.  All students under 19 are free\, w
ith accompanying adults getting 15% off their ticket prices (must call
GBS at (203)576-0263 to take advantage of this offer).  Special two-
concert (March 14 and April 11) 20% off deals can be purchased by call
ing GBS.  Mertens Theater (505 University Avenue) has ample convenien
t parking in lots and on surrounding streets\, and is less than a mile
off Routes 95\, 8\, or 25 by taking Park Avenue south\, then right at
the light at University Avenue.  Mertens is handicap accessible.\n
