SUMMARY:Acrylic Painting 101: a four-session course at Northwind Art
DESCRIPTION:In this series of four classes with all materials provided
\, you will learn all about painting with acrylics. On Thursday aftern
 oons from April 16 through May 7\, we'll explore blending\, value\, co
mposition\, and color relationships. Versatile teaching artist David R
epyak is your guide at Northwind Art School at Fort Worden State Park.
\nAcrylic paint may be used in transparent washes or in striking tex
tures\, with the addition of hard modeling paste and gel mediums. We w
ill explore both. You'll learn about and develop the skills to represe
nt foreground\, midground\, and background planes through painting sim
ple objects from a still life. Through this practice\, you'll nurture
your core skills to grow creative confidence.\nSession 1 includes a sk
etching warmup\, painting of a still life\, choosing analogous colored
papers and working with a three-color palette. \nSession 2 begins wi
th a directional Energy/flow warmup and progresses to creating a 10-st
roke painting and painting your choice of a still-life object and usin
 g a four-color palette.\nSession 3 starts with a high-contrast warmup\
, creating a line drawing with a generous shadow and areas of contrast
\, boldly directing the eye's attention. We'll also discuss and explor
 e  a variety of dynamic\, asymmetrical compositions. We'll paint a co
ffee cup or an apple — your choice — with  four unique compositio
ns and up to four paint colors. \nSession 4 explores tools: palette k
 nives\, forks\, combs\, a variety of scrapers. Then we practice with t
exture\, applying several different textural additive mediums\, includ
ing impasto cold wax\, pumice\, matte or gloss varnishes\, and soft cl
ear gels. Creating from photographs\, we'll challenge ourselves to rep
resent subjects with strong textures:  the bark of a tree\, a winter
landscape that has melted to a spring thaw\, or the play of light on d
eep-ocean waves. All materials and supplies are provided.
