WINDWARD brings to life Fogo Island’s striking geological formations, unique climate, and austere beauty in the latest work by Sharon Lockhart. Filmed on the windswept northern face of the remote island off the coast of Newfoundland, the piece is organized by an unseen, persistent force—the breezes that descend uninterrupted from the Arctic. Organized as twelve short tableaus, WINDWARD depicts delicate portraits of local children as they play and move across the landscape: one flies a kite, others walk on stilts or dip in the calm sea at dusk. In scenes composed and choreographed for the camera, Lockhart draws attention to the young people’s inherited attunement to the environment. Through her lens, the tall grass, volcanic rocks, crashing waves, and weather patterns become essential elements in shaping a narrative of Fogo Island’s unique ecosystem and its residents’ profound connection to its rhythms.
