In honor of Black History Month, Cara Mía Theatre (CMT) and Soul Rep Theatre Company (SRTC), in collaboration with Mulato Teatro from Mexico, proudly announce the world premiere of the first English translation of Jaime Chabaud’s Yanga. This poignant historical play pays homage to the roots of the Afro-Mexican diaspora through the untold story of African revolutionary hero Gaspar Yanga, known as the first liberator of the Americas.

Newly translated to English for the first time by Tomás Ayala-Torres and directed by Anyika McMillan-Herod, co-founder and executive director of Soul Rep Theatre, Yanga is inspired by the real-life story of Yanga, an enslaved African prince who led a rebellion and successfully negotiated an independent territory with the Spanish crown less than 100 years after the arrival of Hernán Cortés in Mexico.
