Mothers are foundational to the human experience: a figure in the lives of every person – whether one associates positive, negative, joyful, or complex feelings with their own mother. Yet conventional Mother’s Day celebrations don't provide a wholly adequate platform for expressing these complex relationships. For its season finale, Emerald City Music aligns the mediums of film and live music to explore the true diverse stories of Pacific Northwesterners that coalesce to define one word: “mother.” These challenging and inspirational accounts – as told by community members and captured by filmmaker Carlin Ma – are presented alongside works by Dvorák, Brahms, Anna Clyne, and more that musically give voice to this ubiquitous theme.
